ARMY DAY SCHOOL, QUEEN AMINA COLLEGE LIFT MILO TROPHY, WIN BRANDED BASKETBALL COURTS
The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium came alive recently as the boys from Army Day Secondary School, Kano and Holy Ghost College, Owerri faced-off as predicted in an action packed, tension soaked and explosive final at the closing ceremony of the 10th edition of the Nestle Milo Secondary Schools’ Basketball Championship.
The final match which featured the skilled Kano boys and the young but determined Owerri boys who have shown excellent form right from the beginning of the championship, was one in which both teams gave no grounds for their opponents to have a resounding lead.
By the end of the 4th quarter, the two sides leveled up with 79 points apiece prompting the game to go into extra time. By the end of the game, the Kano boys were only lucky to be ahead with a one point lead thus ending the game at 90-89 points in favour of the boys from Army Day Secondary School.
In the girls’ category, Queen Amina College, Kaduna confidently defended their title, being winners in last year’s edition, by defeating Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan by 61-51 points to lift the female trophy.
Speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director/CEO, Nestle Nigeria PLC, Mr. Martin Woolnough said that the 10th edition of the championship is a celebration of ten years of great basketball matches, outstanding display of skills and Nestlé’s commitment to the development of basketball in Nigerian schools. He commended the teams and the officials for their outstanding display of skills, team spirit and fair play.
To reward the winners, Mr. Woolnough presented trophies, medals, certificates and a dummy of the branded basketball courts to be constructed in the winning schools, while cheques of =N=150,000 and =N=100,000 were presented to second and third placed teams in each category.
Other trophies given out to deserving contestants include the Best Three Point Shooter Award won by Adebayo Jumoke of Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan and Dabo Bashir of Army Day Secondary School, Kano. The Most valuable Player (MVP) Award went to Blessing Samuel of Queen Amina College Kaduna in the female category and Bashir Dabo again in the male category.
Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan and Holy Ghost College, Owerri won the Most Entertaining Team Award while the Fair Play Trophy went to Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Gboko and International School, Lagos.
